Lascaux, the first masterpiece
Discovered in 1940, the Lascaux cave is often called the Sistine Chapel of Prehistory. The original cave is closed to the public, but in Montignac, Lascaux IV, the International Centre for Cave Art, offers a striking replica. Sharing that emotion in front of paintings thousands of years old makes for a date you will remember. Afterwards, a stroll through Montignac’s old streets along the Vézère lets the conversation carry on.
Les Eyzies and the cliff villages
Further down the valley, Les Eyzies bills itself as the world capital of prehistory: the village nestles at the foot of limestone cliffs and is home to the National Museum of Prehistory. Nearby, La Roque Saint-Christophe reveals an impressive cliff-side troglodyte site, while Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, with its Romanesque church by the water, is one of the most charming villages in Black Périgord. For cooler thrills, the Proumeyssac chasm, nicknamed the cathedral of crystal, dazzles with its rock formations.
Canoeing, a confluence and a sunset
In summer, a canoe trip down the Vézère is one of the loveliest ways to spend a day together, drifting with the current between cliffs and meadows. The river ends its course at Limeuil, perched above its confluence with the Dordogne: an ideal viewpoint for a sunset. On Lyad, members across the department share their walks and tips, a great way to find someone to come aboard with you.
